California Governor Gavin Newsom wants California to be “more than just a resistance state.”

In an interview with KPCC AirTalk host Larry Mantle to mark his first 100 days in office, Governor Newsom said there’s no doubt that the Golden State is “an un-Trump state” but added that he wants California to not just stand tall in its resistance of the Trump administration, but to be “a positive alternative.”

Newsom came out of the gate quickly on the policy side, earmarking hundreds of millions of dollars toward homelessness in his initial budget that was released in January. In his State of the State speech, Newsom announced plans to change the scope of the state high speed rail project to focus on a line between Merced and Bakersfield. Last month, he issued a controversial moratorium on the death penalty in California, less than two years after Californians voted on the 2016 ballot to reform the death penalty rather than abolish it.

Today on AirTalk, Larry Mantle sits down with Governor Newsom to talk about these issues as well as his goals for expanding Medi-Cal, how he plans to attack homelessness in Los Angeles and other cities across the state and how the state would respond if the Trump administration ordered migrants to be placed in so-called “sanctuary cities.”
