In Rick Orlov's Tipoff column, Mayor Eric Garcetti takes on the minimum wage and school board member George McKenna's swearing in brings out the political heavyweights.
Mayor Eric Garcetti used the Labor Day holiday to announce his proposal for increasing the city's minimum wage to $13.25/hour by 2017. "This is fair, this is common sense. This is good for business, this is good for the community," Garcetti said at a rally in South L.A. Los Angeles Times, Daily News, KPCC
The New York Times considers L.A.'s crumbling infrastructure. The newspaper suggests it would cost $8 billion to upgrade the city's sidewalks, roads and water system. "The sheer size of Los Angeles, its reliance on the automobile and, perhaps most important, the stringent voter-imposed restrictions on the government’s ability to raise taxes have turned the region into a symbol of the nation’s infrastructure woes," according to the piece.
KPCC looks at a program run by the Muslim Public Affairs Council that intervenes when it appears young American Muslims are being radicalized. "The program - named the Safe Spaces Initiative - would also seek to identify people who may be headed toward violent extremism. Often, people are driven by joblessness, depression or a sense of alienation, as much as ideology," according to the station.
The Los Angeles Register endorsed Republican Elan Carr for Congress. He's running against state Sen. Ted Lieu to fill a seat held by Rep. Henry Waxman. "To stimulate economic growth to improve the economic conditions of the poorest in our society, Mr. Carr believes the key is supporting the free market and limited government. We agree," according to the piece.
