Rape, Stalking, Dating Violence Reports Are Up At Some SoCal Colleges
Annual campus violence reports show rising incidents of rape, dating violence, and stalking at some Southern California colleges. Officials who said the rise is partly because more students are coming forward.
"The numbers going up to us is actually matching the message that we're putting out to our community which is, please come forward and talk to us about these crimes," Cal State Fullerton police captain Scot Willey said.
Ian Breckenridge-Jackson, a campus sexual violence scholar, says the reports, in many cases, are still below the actual number of crimes taking place. "My interpretation of seeing these spikes in these numbers is that there's finally catching up," he said.
