For six hours, the night riders of Los Angeles shut down the tile-covered 2nd Street runnel for the biggest bicycle drag race the city has ever seen.

More than 200 riders competed and organizers quickly winnowed the field to a group of the 16 fastest in women's and men's categories. Each rider wore an ankle bracelet that timed their efforts to the one-hundredth of a second. In the end, only two remained. The fastest people on two wheels in the City of Angels.

l’Hydroptère

It’s not quite a boat; it’s not quite a plane; it’s l’Hydroptère - the fastest sailboat in the world. This one of a kind boat uses hydrofoils to lift most of the hull out of the water and fly across the surface. This summer the boat will go from Los Angeles to Hawaii in an attempt to break the Transpacific world record.

Inuksuit

48 percussionists perform Inuksuit - an experimental music score - using rocks, cymbals, sirens, glockenspiels and plastic tubes. The piece is inspired by the Inukshuk - a large stone sculpture used by Inuits and other native peoples to orient themselves in the Arctic circle. Composer John Luther Adams created 33 scores that visually mimics these large stone sentinels. This dress rehearsal marks the West Coast debut of the piece in the Ojai Music Festival.

The Croc Lady

From wrestling with crocodiles to capoeira training here in Los Angeles, the 30-year-old doctoral student at UCLA seems like one tough character. Her Latino heritage has opened up new opportunities in her narrow field of study where men often dominate the conversation.

The Car-Horn Concertmaster

Zefrey Throwell is a serial troublemaker. From crashing museums to stripping down in the middle of Wall Street, disruptive behavior is at the heart of Throwell's art.

His ongoing project, Entropy Symphony, is a globe-trotting composition built on large-scale social unrest. The third movement makes use of the most prominent instrument on the gridlocked streets of Los Angeles: the car horn.

Throwell composed a symphony in five parts for 1,000 car horns and passed them out to motorist musicians across the city to play in traffic, in parking lots and from the mountaintops.

Rise of the 'Tubers: Behind the Scenes at Maker Studios

Maker Studios in Culver City, Calif., is the closest thing the world has to a viral video factory. The upstart studio produces content solely for YouTube and racks up hundreds of millions of views in the process.

A cadre of the most successful personalities on YouTube, including ShayCarl, KassemG and Ray William Johnson, formed the collective in 2009 to pool production resources. What started in the living has moved beyond, and the company which once employed a handful of people now employs around 200.

The studio operates at a breakneck pace, producing dozens of videos every month across 300 channels that rack up 500 million views.
